On Sunday last, I visited St Senan's Well or Tober Curnan on Clonlea Lough, near Kilkishen, County Clare.
It is mapped on the OS Discovery Series No 58, and the co-ordinates given on the Sl?ine site are very accurate.
Near to the site, we stopped to get our bearings and an old man came out of his little cottage and insisted on showing us where the well is.
He explained that many years ago on the Pattern Day of August 18th, thousands of people used to visit the well, and it was some occasion, but sadly nobody does now and the well has fallen into disrepair.
The well cannot be seen from the road side, and there are no signs to indicate exactly where it is.
This kind man led us through a gate from the road, and then a gate on the right of this field. He then showed us that the gate which opens onto the lake shore is where the well is located.
The well is located on the shores of Clonlea Lough within a relatively large walled enclosure. Within the enclosure, the well is extremely run down, and would appreciate a good make-over. A rotten plank was floating in the water, and much algae and weeds are growing around the water edge.
Apart from this, the water was very clear and sweet tasting.
The outlet drain does not seem to be blocked, but for how long it will remain like this, I do not know.
The well house is two-tier. The bottom section is where the well itself is, and the second tier is an enclosed "box" to house the offerings and gifts. Only a few offerings now remain, and the condition of these would indicate that they have been there some time.
The entire structure is surmounted by an iron double cross formed by a large cross with smaller cross on top.
The well screamed "Help!" to me when I was there, and it hurt to see what was once a magnificient place decaying into oblivion.
I cleaned what I could in and around the well, filled up my bottle, and left a small offering of a quartz stone and a coin before I left.
