  • St Flannan's Well, Killaloe, Co Clare

On Monday last, I visited St Flannan's Well in the village of Killaloe, County Clare.

It is mapped on the OS Discovery Series No 58, and the co-ordinates given on this site are very accurate. The well is located, believe it or not, in the back-garden of the AIB Bank!

I went in and asked permission to visit the well, and the porter very happily took me through the side entrance to see it.

The well is situated with an apple tree on one side of it, and a headless S?le na Gig on the other. The porter explained that there used to many cross-inscribed slabs beside it also, but these have been taken in by St Flannan's Cathedral for safe-keeping and housed in the oratory.

The well is very overgrown, and the water quality is not very good, but it is most certainly in a wonderful setting.

The porter seemed to know alot about the well and explained that, in addition to its use in baptisms, the water is used in the cure of sore eyes.

I filled up my bottle, and then left.
